The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s port infrastructure through a strategic partnership with DP World, owners and operators of the Port of Dubai.

The collaboration aims to enhance port efficiency, attract investments, and modernise operations to position Nigeria as a major player in global maritime trade.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola made this known over the weekend when he received a delegation from DP World. He assured the company of the government’s willingness to cooperate and welcome investments that will drive infrastructure development and port management improvements.

Oyetola welcomed DP World’s proposal to establish an industrial park that would complement the ports and serve as a logistics hub for export processing. He highlighted Nigeria’s extensive coastline and vast land resources, making it an ideal location for industrial parks that support trade and economic growth. He urged the delegation to submit a formal proposal to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for consideration.

The minister emphasised that the Federal Government is keen on increasing private sector participation in port operations, stressing that investment returns in the sector are highly viable. He noted that ongoing efforts to modernize Nigeria’s ports include deepening the draught levels to between 16-16.5 metres to restore the country’s status as a transshipment hub.

Additionally, Oyetola revealed that the government is implementing digital solutions to streamline port operations and minimise human interference. These efforts include the Cargo Tracking System, the Port Community System and the National Single Window Initiative, all designed to boost efficiency and reduce turnaround times at the ports.

Speaking on behalf of DP World, the leader of the delegation, Sultan Ahmed Bin-Sulayem disclosed that the company operates in 48 countries with over 90 terminals worldwide, including a strong presence in many African nations. He expressed DP World’s keen interest in leveraging its expertise to enhance Nigeria’s port system, pledging to bring global best practices and cutting-edge technology to the country’s maritime sector.
