The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to a future where women and girls are fully integrated into Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, pledging that gender equality in the digital space will move from aspiration to reality.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani during a press briefing held at the ministry’s conference hall over the weekend in Abuja. The event was part of activities marking the 2025 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), themed “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation.”

Represented by the deputy director of the National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), Engr. Adeyemo Olugbenga, the minister emphasised the significance of this year’s theme, describing it as both timely and essential.

“The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 17 as WTISD to focus global attention on the benefits of the digital revolution in information and communication technology (ICT). This year’s theme reminds us that a digital economy must be inclusive. When women are excluded from accessing technology, acquiring digital skills, or leading in tech-driven industries, the entire world loses potential,” Olugbenga said.

According to a statement by the deputy director and head of information and public relations at the ministry, Eunice Akro the WTISD aims to raise awareness about the role of the Internet, ICT and digital innovations in connecting the world and driving sustainable development, with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), leading this global mission.

Although Nigeria has made notable progress, seeing women thrive in fintech, healthtech and edtech, significant gender gaps remain. The government remains resolute in addressing this divide through key initiatives such as the National Gender Digital Inclusion Strategy (NGDIS), the Digital Skills Development Programme, funding access for women-led tech start-ups and strengthening cybersecurity to create a safer digital space.

The ministry also urged collective efforts beyond government actions, calling on the private sector, academic institutions, civil society groups and individuals, especially men and boys, to actively support and promote digital inclusivity across all levels.
