The Nigerian Government has instructed operators and regulators to ensure that project sites and facilities undergo thorough remediation according to international best practices.
This is essential for safeguarding the health of Nigerians, protecting biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarable Lawal issued this directive during a training session for staff of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and accredited environmental consultants. The session, titled “Decommissioning Plans and Environmental Remediation Strategies,” was organised by NESREA with support from the European Union and took place in Abuja.
Lawal highlighted that inadequate decommissioning of project sites and facilities has resulted in environmental damage, public health crises, and economic losses for the country. He emphasised the importance of aligning industrial activities in Nigeria with the highest standards of environmental protection and sustainability.
He stated, “As Nigeria continues to grow its industrial, extractive, and energy sectors, we must not overlook the potential environmental and social impacts of these activities. Properly decommissioning sites and implementing effective remediation strategies is crucial for safeguarding public health, protecting biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of our natural resources.”
In his opening remarks, the director-general of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor explained that the workshop is part of the agency’s efforts to enhance the capacity of staff and accredited consultants to ensure that industrial activities do not jeopardize the well-being of citizens and the environment.
He added, “This process goes beyond simply ceasing operations. It involves managing environmental risks, ensuring the safe disposal of waste, mitigating potential hazards and remediating sites to protect public health and facilitate sustainable post-decommissioning uses.”
Barikor also expressed his gratitude to the European Union for their generous support and collaboration in successfully organising the programme.
