The Federal Government has launched a series of initiatives to enhance Nigeria’s capacity for local production of essential medical supplies, marking a significant step towards transforming the country’s healthcare landscape.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate disclosed this development over the weekend in Abuja, emphasising the government’s commitment to medical industrialisation to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals and healthcare equipment.

The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent executive order, which provides incentives for the local production of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, test kits and medical devices. Described as a pioneering policy, the order reflects the government’s determination to attract both local and international investors into Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Pate expressed optimism regarding the growing interest from international stakeholders now exploring business models suited to Nigeria’s evolving healthcare industry. “We are witnessing the early stages of what could be a game-changer for Nigeria’s healthcare system. The President’s commitment has laid a robust foundation for growth, and stakeholders are responding enthusiastically,” he stated.

He also commended industry leaders like the Federation of Nigerian Pharmaceutical Industry for their proactive efforts in supporting emergency healthcare through local pharmaceutical aid, such as assisting flood victims in Northern Nigeria. He noted that partnerships between government and industry are essential for improving healthcare access and building a resilient health infrastructure.

According to Pate, encouraging local manufacturing not only creates jobs but also strengthens Nigeria’s healthcare sector for the future. He emphasised that the drive towards self-sufficiency aligns with the government’s vision to prioritise the health and well-being of Nigerians.

Pate also outlined efforts to remove bureaucratic obstacles in the sector, highlighting a Presidential Executive Order that grants tax and tariff waivers on raw materials and manufacturing equipment. “This order includes a specific list of eligible items, accompanied by market-shaping incentives and effective procurement strategies to support local industries,” he explained. “Our goal is to create a regulatory system that is both efficient and effective and we’ve already made significant strides in this direction.”

The minister noted a shift in the market, evidenced by Nigerian industry players coming together to donate pharmaceuticals and international companies like GSK expressing interest in local production. “When global stakeholders like GSK signal a commitment to Nigeria, it’s a testament to the success of these reforms,” he said.

With the government’s unwavering focus on building a sustainable healthcare system, Pate emphasised the need to stay the course to ensure lasting benefits for the Nigerian healthcare sector.
