The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said it has unveiled plans to hand over 14 maternal and childcare (MCC) facilities and 80-100 bedded equipped healthcare centres, in a significant move to address the high maternal and child mortality rates in Nigeria.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Development, Dr. Tunji Alausa shared this announcement during an interview with Science Nigeria in Abuja.
The donation of these facilities stems from the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAPSDGs), reflecting a commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the country. Alausa acknowledged the progress in reducing under-five and infant mortality rates but stressed that Nigeria still contributes significantly to global maternal mortality rates.
These newly constructed facilities are expected to play a pivotal role in providing essential healthcare services to mothers and children, contributing to an overall improvement in healthcare infrastructure. The MCC and healthcare centres will operate under the Federal Teaching Hospitals and federal medical centres (FMCs) nationwide, enhancing the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive healthcare to Nigerians.
Alausa expressed gratitude to the OSSAP-SDG and emphasised the importance of inter-governmental relationships and partnerships in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, emphasising the government’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare to Nigerian citizens.
The senior special assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SSAP on SDG), Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire was commended for her dedication and efforts in making this collaboration a reality. The ministry looks forward to the positive impact these MCC and 80-100 facilities will have on the health outcomes of the nation and anticipates continued success in such partnerships in the future.
