The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako has assured the Abeokuta, Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) of the Federal Government’s efforts in preventing flooding across the country.

Salako conveyed this assurance while receiving a delegation of the society, led by its branch chairman, Engr. Olumuyiwa Idowu, in his office in Abuja.

The minister noted that the ministry is aware of most flood-prone locations in Ogun State and emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach, in collaboration with the state government, to achieve a permanent solution to flooding. He advised the NSE Abeokuta branch to engage in advocacy with the state government to address all factors contributing to flooding in Ogun State.

Salako also highlighted the importance of educating the public about the dangers of turning drainages and culverts into dump sites and the consequences of such actions. He stressed the benefits of tree planting as a measure to combat flooding.

Earlier, Idowu briefed the minister on their comprehensive flood assessment conducted in 33 locations within Abeokuta metropolis and Ilaro in Ogun State. These areas are severely affected by flooding due to the indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainages.

In a statement by the ministry’s head of press and public relations signed by Mudasiru Mufutau, Idowu called for a holistic assessment of all critical infrastructure in Ogun State that are at risk of collapsing. He solicited the minister’s support for the full implementation of their assessment report, which is currently before the Ogun State government.
