The Federal Character Commission (FCC) held a joyous and memorable celebration on Thursday to honour Dr. Chuks Okoli, who formally exited civil service but will continue to serve as Acting Secretary to the Commission until the current board’s tenure ends in June 2025.

The event, organised by the public affairs and communication (PAC) Department in collaboration with the office of the secretary to the commission, took place at the FCC headquarters in Abuja and was filled with music, cultural rites and emotional tributes. Okoli’s arrival was met with trumpets, flutes and cheers, creating a festive atmosphere that drew in passersby.

The event began with a prayer led by the deputy director and senior special assistant to the secretary, M.O. Oderinwale. Director of legal and prosecution, Michael Ugu followed with a traditional blessing and kola nut ceremony, conducted in line with cultural customs.

In a glowing tribute, the director of the PAC department, Chizea Christopher praised Okoli’s leadership, saying it had fostered departmental growth and unity. He described him as a mentor and father figure who upheld integrity and compassion in service.

A dramatic performance by the department’s troupe added a lively touch to the occasion, humorously portraying Dr. Okoli’s career from 2010 to 2023, drawing laughter and nostalgic cheers from the audience.

Deputy director and head of the media unit, Prince Ralph Adefisayo described Okoli as “a voice for the voiceless and a leader who understands the pulse of his team,” while the deputy director, Chioma Martins called him “a brother, boss and father,” offering heartfelt prayers for his future.

Tributes poured in from other senior staff, as Comrade Alade James urged staff to follow Okoli’s example of humility and sincerity; the director of FCC FCT Office, Dr. Rita Ebele credited his support for helping her complete her PhD.; Director of finance and accounts, Comrade Tons honoured him with a solidarity song; Comrade Elder Enoch fondly recalled their extensive travels and Okoli’s egalitarian nature; Acting director of MIS, Comrade Abiade Paul and Kolawole Gbenga also offered moving tributes, with Gbenga prostrating before Okoli in a deep show of Yoruba cultural respect.

Director of special duties, Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi gave the toast, describing Okoli as “a visionary, result-oriented leader and scholar.”

The celebration continued with a gift presentation led by Chizea on behalf of the PAC Department and the office of the secretary, as colleagues and directors gathered to show appreciation.

In his remarks, Okoli expressed deep gratitude to God, his colleagues and family – two of his children were present – and praised the PAC Department for organising what he called “one of the most unforgettable” moments of his career.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Olatunji Lawrence while the event closed with a prayer from the director of SAPAD, Chijioke Charles.

The day marked not only a farewell but a celebration of Okoli’s enduring legacy of service, mentorship and excellence.
