The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed a video circulating online that showed a disagreement between one of its staff and an individual concerning cargo charges at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal.

“We would like to clarify our cargo policies and provide context regarding the incident,” a statement from the authority’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah began.

“Contrary to initial reports, the individual involved was not a passenger but a cargo agent engaged in illegal operations at the airport. She refused to pay the stipulated charges for the cargo and behaved unacceptably, damaging equipment and straining our resources.

“Furthermore, we want to clarify that there was no molestation by FAAN staff, nor was there any request for a bribe during the incident. This situation amounted to an act of blackmail, as our staff were merely enforcing the correct levy.

“We urge all cargo agents and members of the public to adhere to designated cargo areas, utilizing proper vehicles and personnel while ensuring levies are paid. Our cargo policies aim to align with international best practices, prevent damage to airport facilities, and prioritise customer service and safety.

“Specifically, we impose a fine of ₦5,000.00 (five thousand naira) on non-compliant cargoes for reasons including:

– Failure to utilise designated cargo terminals.

– Damage to carousels resulting from improper cargo handling,” the statement read.

The statement emphasised FAAN’s commitment to providing clear guidance on its policies and procedures.

“We advise the public to comply with the rules governing airport operations to prevent similar incidents in the future. By working together, we can ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for everyone.”
