The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a partnership with the European Commission Humanitarian Office to ensure disaster risk reduction in Nigeria, especially in the agricultural sector.
The director-general of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike lauded the EU body for its interventions in Nigeria and expressed gratitude during a courtesy visit by the commission to his office in Abuja.
Anosike emphasised the benefits of partnering with the European Commission Humanitarian Office for disaster risk reduction in Nigeria, especially for farmers and other economic sectors. NiMet plays a crucial role in disseminating weather and climate information daily, which aids in disaster prevention. The DG highlighted the impact of weather advisories and forecasts in mitigating disasters, underscoring the importance of preparedness for extreme weather events.
Speaking on behalf of the EU delegation, Lisa De La Rubia highlighted NiMet’s significance as a key agency, expressing the EU’s interest in collaborating to enhance disaster risk reduction efforts in Nigeria over the next three years.
Present at the meeting were director of weather forecasting services at NiMet, Professor Vincent Weli and other senior staff members. Additional members from the European Commission Humanitarian Office team included Charlotte Billoir, Confort Agwu and Sandie Romero Ruiz.
