The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike has urged staff to cultivate a workplace where ethical conduct is paramount.

Anosike addressed this call to action on Tuesday, August 16, 2024, during the launch of the agency’s Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy and Code of Ethics.

“The principles of ethics, integrity, and accountability are foundational for any successful organization,” Anosike emphasised. “They form the bedrock of any meteorological organisation’s credibility and effectiveness. Upholding these values will significantly build trust with our clients and stakeholders, ensuring that NiMet fulfills its mandate and contributes to national socio-economic development and the safety of lives and property.”

Welcoming guests from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other resource persons to the event, Anosike highlighted the importance of their presence. He noted that it reaffirms the collaborative spirit between NiMet and the ICPC in the collective fight against corruption, underscoring their commitment to institutionalizing ethics and integrity in public service.

Presenting the NiMet Code of Ethics and Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy, Anosike stated, “These documents represent our unwavering commitment to ethical conduct and our determination to combat corruption at all levels. As we unveil these documents today, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where ethical behavior is a culture and corruption has no place.”

Anosike concluded by stressing the agency’s zero-tolerance stance against corruption. “This position is vital as corruption can undermine the effectiveness of our services and the realisation of our goals, and it could erode public trust in our critical work. The policy details the agency’s mechanisms to prevent, detect, and address any form of bribery and corruption. It sends a clear message that NiMet is committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations. All staff members are therefore expected to embrace and adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct as stipulated in the NiMet Code of Ethics and Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy.”

Mr. Charles Nwosu, representing the chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, expressed gratitude to NiMet’s management and staff for launching the code of ethics and the anti-corruption and bribery policy. “We are highly impressed with the working environment we have seen at NiMet. We are grateful to DG, Prof. Anosike for making himself available for this event. We will convey this positive impression to the ICPC chairman, who will in turn report to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting that NiMet is aligned with the fight against corruption.”

NiMet’s launch of these critical documents marks a significant step in promoting integrity and accountability within the agency, reflecting its commitment to ethical governance and public trust.
