ElectHER, a leading advocacy organisation for inclusive governance, has launched a new website, www.independentcandidacybill.ng, to promote awareness and grassroots support for the Independent Candidacy Bill.

CEO of ElectHER, Ms. Ibijoke Faborode announced the launch on December 3, 2024, in Abuja. She described it as a strategic effort to educate Nigerians about the Bill’s objectives, track its legislative progress, and inspire citizen involvement.

“The Independent Candidacy Bill, sponsored by Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., seeks to amend key sections of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, including Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177,” Faborode explained. “These amendments would empower Nigerians to contest elections without political party affiliation, creating opportunities for marginalised and underrepresented groups to participate in leadership.”

Faborode emphasised the Bill’s potential to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. “This initiative is about breaking barriers to leadership. Independent candidacy fosters a more inclusive and competitive democratic system, complementing existing political party structures,” she said.

The newly launched website offers comprehensive resources, including detailed explanations of the Bill, legislative updates, and tools for citizens to express their support. It also serves as a rallying point for reform, with backing from international partners such as the European Union and the Canadian Fund for Local Initiative.

Faborode urged Nigerians to engage with the platform, noting its importance in advancing a fairer and more inclusive democracy.

ElectHER continues its pioneering efforts to promote women’s political and economic inclusion across Africa. Through advocacy, capacity building and innovation, the organisation remains committed to dismantling barriers to leadership and driving meaningful democratic reforms.
