The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expressed serious concern over recent reports by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Nigerians selling their data, including national identification numbers (NINs), for small sums.

According to the EFCC, an alarming trend has emerged where individuals receive between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 to surrender copies of their personal information, which is then sold to fintech institutions for around ₦5,000. NIMC described this as a major security threat with severe consequences for NIN holders.

In a statement issued by its head of corporate communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke NIMC emphasised that it will not be held liable for any data shared voluntarily by individuals or their proxies in exchange for financial gain.

The commission reiterated that Nigerians have been consistently advised not to disclose their NIN or personal information to unauthorised persons or organisations. It also reminded service providers that every NIN presented for services must be properly verified before access is granted.

To enhance personal data protection, the Commission encouraged the public to download the NINAuth App, available on Apple iOS and Google Play Store. The app offers secure and seamless features that empower users to control access to their personal information and ensure better protection of their identity.

NIMC urged citizens to take responsibility for safeguarding their data and warned that actions driven by financial inducement could compromise national security and individual privacy. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to identity protection and secure service delivery.
