The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has taken a firm stance against the recent social media attacks on its director-general, Dr. Bashir Jamoh and has issued a statement urging the public to dismiss the “unfounded allegations” circulating on social media.
In a statement signed by the assistant director of public relations, Osagie Edward the agency warned the public against being misled by the content of the social media calumny. It clarified that the allegations had previously been addressed in 2021. At that time, Jamoh had personally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the claims.
The statement emphasised the lack of truth in the recent allegations, asserting that the resurfacing of the video is the work of mischief-makers to misinform the public for unknown interests.
The circulated video contains faceless individuals making unverified claims about a supposed N1.5 trillion and USD 9 million payment into the personal account of Jamoh. NIMASA categorically denied these allegations, emphasising that “the matter had already been addressed three years ago in 2021 when the DG sought an investigation by the EFCC”.
The re-circulation of the video, according to the statement, aims to impugn Jamoh’s integrity, character and family name. NIMASA urged the public to disregard the misleading content of the social media post, clarifying that it is a baseless attempt to tarnish the reputation of the director general.
