The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd is set to host the next edition of its Regional Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT Training Programme in Calabar, Cross River State, from July 21 to 26, 2025.

The south-south regional edition is open to university students, local innovators and young professionals, with interested participants encouraged to register via the NIGCOMSAT website.

Designed to inspire and empower young Nigerians, the initiative seeks to foster innovative, satellite-driven solutions to real-world challenges while equipping participants with hands-on skills in the tech and communications space.

Speaking ahead of the event, NIGCOMSAT managing director/CEO, Jane Egerton-Idehen said the five-day hackathon would provide a platform for participants to identify community needs, develop creative ideas, build prototypes and receive mentorship from industry experts.

She added that the winning team will join the 2025 Cohort of the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme ā€“ gaining access to funding, mentorship and support for scaling their solutions.

In parallel, 100 young people will be trained in the installation, configuration and maintenance of very small aperture terminal (VSAT) systems. The programme aims to address the broadband gap in underserved areas, with all trainees receiving industry-recognised certifications to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial prospects in the ICT sector.

A statement by the head of corporate affairs at NIGCOMSAT, Aisha Bantam recalled that previous editions held in Yola (Adamawa State) and Dutse (Jigawa State) in February and April 2025 respectively, attracted strong regional participation and underscored the programme’s growing impact.

Bantam noted that the broader vision of the hackathon and training is to harness the potential of Nigeria’s youth, reduce unemployment and scale innovation for national development.

The south-south edition is being co-hosted by the Cross River State government, in partnership with NIGCOMSAT Ltd.
