The executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Danbatta has urged businesses to embrace the potential of disruptive technologies that have been adopted worldwide to enhance productivity and sustainability.

Speaking at the 2023 edition of the Information, Communication, Technology and Telecommunications (ICTEL) expo organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lagos, Danbatta emphasised that recent advancements in the global ICT industry are reshaping the business landscape.

Represented by the director of the consumer affairs bureau at the commission, Mr. Alkasim Umar, Danbatta highlighted the significant role technology has always played in shaping the world. He noted that in recent years, technological advancements have accelerated at an unprecedented rate.

The NCC helmsman emphasised that the ongoing 4th Industrial Revolution, driven by the Internet, is fundamentally changing all aspects of people’s lives and reshaping economic, social and cultural paradigms across the world.

Danbatta identified various disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain technology, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), fifth generation (5G) and other emerging technologies that have shown the potential to transform industries and business models.

He encouraged businesses to embrace innovation and adapt to the changing landscape brought about by these technologies, adding that companies that are agile and willing to experiment with emerging technologies will gain a competitive advantage in their respective industries.

The NCC CEO also reassured attendees that the NCC’s strategic management plan reflects the Commission’s commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to drive positive change and transform industries. “By embracing tech disruption, we are empowering individuals, businesses, and communities to thrive in the digital age. Together, let us build a Nigeria where technology is a catalyst for inclusive growth, innovation flourishes, and the benefits of connectivity reach every Nigerian,” Danbatta stated.

President of LCCI, Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole commended the NCC for providing a predictable telecom regulatory environment and noted that the theme of this year’s ICTEL Expo was carefully chosen considering the far-reaching impact disruptive technologies are having on businesses globally.

During the expo, Danbatta was presented with an LCCI Appreciation Award in recognition of his contribution towards the success of the 2023 ICTEL Expo. The award was presented by the vice president of LCCI, Leye Kupoluyi in Lagos.
