The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha has urged members of the newly inaugurated Technical Working Group (TWG) on Climate Change to be proactive and results-driven in delivering on their mandate.

Maiha gave the charge in Abuja during the formal inauguration of the 15-member TWG, aimed at enhancing climate responsiveness within the livestock sector. Represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Akujobi the minister emphasised the importance of aligning the group’s work with the Nigeria Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS 2025–2035), the ministry’s operational roadmap.

He stressed that the ministry must play a leading role in national and global efforts addressing climate change impacts on livestock, calling for the development of a sectoral plan, resource mobilisation strategy, action plan and communication framework.

“We must promote collaboration, set targets and ensure a robust monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system,” he said, noting that resilience-building in the sector was essential given increasing climate threats.

In his remarks, director of sanitary management and climate change, Dr. Ishaku Mohammed said Nigeria remains highly vulnerable to climate shocks and the TWG’s work would be instrumental in strengthening the sector’s climate resilience.

A statement from the director of information and public relations, Ben Bem Goong quoted Mohammed as assuring the minister of the group’s capacity to deliver, based on their competence and commitment.

He also disclosed that international partners, including the German International Cooperation (GIZ), have expressed readiness to support the TWG through capacity-building initiatives.

Mohammed noted that the Ministry of Livestock Development is the first in the country to inaugurate a dedicated climate-focused technical group, marking a significant milestone in sectoral leadership on climate action.
