In Abuja and Lagos, the British High Commission held welcome-home ceremonies to celebrate 191 Nigerian scholars (44 Chevening and 147 Commonwealth) who have just completed their studies in the United Kingdom through the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships.

These scholars pursued a wide range of Master’s degrees, PhDs, and fellowship programmes.

The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are awarded annually by the UK Government to individuals from various backgrounds who demonstrate the commitment and skills required to create positive change.

At both events, the scholars and fellows were recognised for their exceptional academic achievements, received their completion certificates, and were officially inducted into the Chevening and Commonwealth alumni community in Nigeria. They shared their academic journeys and experiences and expressed their readiness to use the skills and knowledge gained during their studies to contribute to Nigeria’s development.

Speaking at the ceremony in Lagos, British Deputy High Commissioner, Jonny Baxter said:

“We are incredibly proud of the 191 Nigerian Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars who have completed their studies in the UK. This milestone represents not only your hard work and dedication but also the impact of these scholarship programmes.

“I encourage you to use your new knowledge, skills and experience for the betterment of your communities, your sectors, and your country. Challenge yourselves, collaborate and always strive for the best. We look forward to seeing your contributions to Nigeria and globally.”

Chevening Scholar Daniel Onwe, who studied International Law and Development at the University of Nottingham, UK, remarked:

“The Chevening experience is simply life-transforming. As a person with a disability and a disability rights activist, Chevening exposed me to firsthand experience of what an inclusive society should be – where everyone can participate and engage without feeling like an outsider. Beyond what I learned in the classroom, the people taught me so much, not just about the rich British culture but also about different countries and global politics. Chevening is undoubtedly a game changer.”

A Commonwealth Scholar, who studied International Energy Law & Policy (LLM) at the University of Dundee, UK, shared:

“Being a Commonwealth Scholar has been a privilege of a lifetime! I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the nuanced positions needed to solve international energy issues through world-class institutions and a diverse student perspective.

“The chance to explore the UK and other countries while participating in professional development workshops was culturally stimulating. I have made invaluable friends from across the globe. I am eternally grateful for my new academic achievements and look forward to the next decade with positivity and purpose!”
