
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has been elected vice-chair of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council for 2025, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing push for digital transformation and inclusive innovation on the global stage.
The election, which took place during the ongoing ITU Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, reinforces Nigeria’s standing as a key player in advancing resilient, sustainable and equitable digital infrastructure across developing economies.
Founded in 1865, the ITU is the oldest specialised agency of the United Nations, with a mandate to connect the world through innovative and sustainable information and communications technologies. It plays a critical role in shaping the global digital landscape and bridging the digital divide.
Accepting the new role, Tijani expressed deep appreciation for the confidence placed in him by the ITU secretary-general, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the management team and all member states. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ITU’s vision, pledging to focus on expanding resilient digital infrastructure and ensuring that even the most underserved communities have access to meaningful connectivity.
The minister noted that the world is currently navigating a defining era shaped by rapid technological advancements and profound societal shifts. He described digital technology as a transformative force capable of driving inclusion, introspection and informed decision-making as nations craft their digital futures.
In his remarks, Tijani congratulated Cristiana Flutur of Romania on her election as ITU council chair and pledged to work closely with her and other council members to promote shared goals. He called for collective efforts to position the ITU as a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted collaboration that will benefit present and future generations alike.
A statement from the deputy director and head of press and public relations at the ministry, Eunice Akro confirmed that the ITU Conference continues in Geneva. Tijani’s election not only amplifies Nigeria’s voice within the global digital policy space but also demonstrates the country’s readiness to contribute actively to shaping the future of connectivity, innovation and sustainable technological growth worldwide.
