The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Kogi State government and families affected by the tragic boat accident that occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Kupa Ebbe Village, Kupa South local government area.
In a statement issued by Muhammad Zakari, the ministry’s head of press and public relations, Oyetola conveyed his sympathies: “I extend my heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.”
The minister highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment, under President Bola Tinubu, to improving waterway safety. He affirmed ongoing collaboration with the Kogi State Government and relevant stakeholders to prevent similar tragedies.
Oyetola lauded the swift response by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Kogi State government, which ensured the rescue of some survivors. He directed NIWA to enforce compliance with its Waterways Transportation Code, urging strict penalties for violations.
The minister also called on boat operators, community leaders, and traditional authorities to discourage nighttime boat trips, stressing that collective efforts are essential for safer waterways. “The government alone cannot drive this process wholly,” he stated.
