The director-general of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote has emphasised the significance of birth registration and the National Identification Number (NIN) in advancing digital development in Nigeria.
She highlighted the collaboration between the NIMC and the National Population Commission (NPC) in digital birth registration. Coker-Odusote made these remarks at the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Project, acknowledging it as one of the achievements of President Bola Tinubu.
She praised the NPC for accelerating and digitalising birth registration and assured that the NIMC will remain a supportive partner in driving the country’s social and educational transformation.
The NIMC DG emphasised, “Birth registration is not only crucial for individuals but also for the nation’s development.” Digital birth and NIN registration will enhance access to government education, healthcare and other social benefits for all Nigerians, not just children.
She reiterated the place of birth registration as a fundamental right and an essential part of the nation’s development plans.
The DG called for the support of civil society and international partners for the success of the initiative and reaffirmed NIMC’s commitment to providing seamless NIN registration, especially for children under 16 years.
In a statement by the commission’s head of corporate communications, Kayode Adegoke, Coker-Odusote also expressed gratitude to Her Excellency, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support towards the success of NIN and birth registration in Nigeria.
