The director-general of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha has touted biotechnology as a powerful tool to address national economic challenges across various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, energy, industry and the environment.
Speaking at the one-day NBRDA Day at the just concluded 2024 STI Expo in Abuja, Mustapha highlighted the transformative potential of biotechnology in driving economic development, fostering innovation and promoting sustainability.
Biotechnology serves as a catalyst for economic growth by leveraging biological processes to develop innovative products and solutions. Strategic investment in biotechnology research infrastructure and human capital is crucial for unlocking its full potential and driving economic prosperity.
In agriculture, biotechnology enhances production and resilience, contributing to food security, farmers’ livelihoods and overall economic development. Innovative biotechnology-driven solutions address challenges such as crop diseases, pests and climate change impacts.
In healthcare, biotechnology advancements improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and stimulate economic growth. Biopharmaceuticals derived from biotechnology processes offer targeted therapies for various diseases, enhancing treatment efficacy and reducing adverse effects.
Industrial biotechnology promotes sustainable production processes and products, fostering resource efficiency, environmental conservation, and economic opportunities in renewable industries. By adopting industrial biotechnology, nations can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, mitigate environmental impacts and spur green economic growth.
Environmental biotechnology contributes to sustainability through bioremediation, waste management, and renewable energy production. Biotechnology-driven renewable energy solutions mitigate reliance on non-renewable resources, promote energy independence, and drive economic development while preserving the environment.
Mustapha emphasised that harnessing the economic benefits of biotechnology could create 10,000 jobs for unemployed youths and women while improving environmental hygiene. This underscores the potential of biotechnology to empower nations, build resilient economies, improve living standards and achieve sustainable development goals.
Chairman of the STI Expo local organizing committee, Dr. Rose Gidado described biotechnology as a game-changer that has revolutionised various sectors, from medicine and agriculture to environmental sustainability and industrial processes. She assured that NBRDA would showcase the latest developments, inspire new ideas, foster collaboration and drive progress in the field.
“As we embark on this journey of discovery, let us not forget the crucial role of science, technology, and innovation in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our society today,” Gidado emphasised.
“Biotechnology offers powerful solutions that have the potential to transform our world for the better, whether it’s combating disease, feeding a growing population, or protecting our environment.”
