The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike has stated that the training on automatic weather station (AWS) configuration and climate data tool (CDT) will help the agency improve data availability and quality control by combining station data with satellite.

Anosike made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the training at NiMet’s headquarters on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

He mentioned that the training aligns with NiMet management’s commitment to ensuring that staff are adequately trained and skilled in modern weather and climate application tools. Furthermore, Anosike highlighted the significance of the Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project, which is facilitating the training in collaboration with Sahel Consulting. This initiative supports the government’s goal to enhance food security, provide early warnings, and protect lives and property.

Anosike also emphasised the importance of the training in strengthening the resilience of agricultural and food systems in Nigeria. He stressed that the agricultural sector, as the largest employer in the country, is essential for the economy, providing sustenance for millions of Nigerians and ensuring food security for the growing population. He acknowledged that agriculture faces challenges due to climate change, such as erratic weather patterns and extreme weather events, which pose significant risks to agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Concluding his remarks, Anosike urged all participants to actively engage and be prepared to share the knowledge and skills gained with their colleagues after the training.
