The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has debunked reports circulating online that claim a lengthy concession period has been approved for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
In a statement issued by Tunde Moshood, the special adviser on media and communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, the ministry described the reports as “baseless and untrue.”
The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to certain online reports suggesting that a specific lengthy concession period has already been agreed upon for the Enugu International Airport. These reports are completely false,” the statement read.
Moshood clarified that while the Federal Government is indeed considering the concession of five major airports, including the Enugu airport, the process is still at the proposal and evaluation stage. The move, he said, is part of a broader effort to ensure Nigerian airports meet global standards, especially as many currently operate at a financial loss and are subsidised monthly by the government.
He explained that although various concessionaires have submitted proposals with different terms and durations, no final decision has been made. “All proposals are undergoing rigorous evaluation and will be reviewed by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) before being forwarded to the minister for presentation to the Federal Executive Council (FEC),” he stated.
Moshood emphasised that the process remains transparent and inclusive. “In the interest of transparency, the minister directed that aviation labour unions be part of the negotiation teams months ago,” he added.
He described the claims of a predetermined concession period as false, misleading and, possibly, designed to stir disaffection and mistrust.
“The minister, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, is committed to a fully transparent process. With his background and proven track record, he will not allow any irregularities under his leadership,” Moshood affirmed.
He assured the public that all decisions will prioritise national interest and the sustainable development of the aviation sector.
