The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, has arrived in Brazil on a strategic working visit, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to establish a direct air link between Nigeria and South America.
The minister landed in Brazil late yesterday, accompanied by the director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, along with representatives of Nigerian airline operators.
A key highlight of the visit is a high-level meeting with leading aircraft manufacturer and lessor, Embraer, at its headquarters in São José dos Campos, São Paulo. Renowned for its expertise in regional aircraft production, Embraer is engaging the Nigerian delegation on opportunities to strengthen the country’s aviation industry through improved access to modern aircraft, competitive leasing arrangements, and collaboration with credible global financiers.
“We had in-depth discussions with Embraer on how they can support Nigerian aviation through their vast network of lessors and financial institutions. Our aim is to equip local operators with the tools and partnerships they need to thrive,” said the minister.
The delegation’s mission continues today in Brasilia, where Keyamo is scheduled to meet with his Brazilian counterpart, Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho. A key agenda item is the review of the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Brazil to pave the way for the launch of direct flight operations between the two nations.
This landmark initiative supports Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, expanding trade and deepening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and South America.
