The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, on Wednesday received the Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Alberto Castellar Padilla at his office in Abuja during a working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral aviation ties between the two nations.

The meeting focused on a strategic proposal by the Venezuelan government to establish direct air connectivity between Nigeria and Venezuela. Padilla disclosed that Venezuela’s national airline, CONVIASA Airlines, is ready and fully equipped to commence direct flight operations to Nigeria. He appealed for the cooperation and support of the Federal Government to facilitate the necessary processes and ensure a timely launch of services.

According to the ambassador, direct flights between the two countries would not only reduce travel time but also open up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. He emphasised that Venezuela views Nigeria as a key partner on the African continent and is keen to expand its diplomatic and economic footprint through this aviation initiative.

In response, the minister commended the proposal as a significant milestone in enhancing Nigeria’s aviation and diplomatic relations with South America. He described the initiative as a timely step that aligns with the current administration’s agenda to expand Nigeria’s international air connectivity and promote mutual economic development.

Keyamo noted that the proposed air route would improve access for business communities, stimulate tourism and create greater opportunities for bilateral cooperation in various sectors. He further stated that increased international flight options would support Nigeria’s vision of becoming a regional aviation hub.

To accelerate progress, the minister immediately established a joint technical committee made up of officials from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The committee is mandated to work with the relevant stakeholders and fast-track all regulatory approvals, route designations and operational requirements to ensure a smooth entry process for CONVIASA Airlines.

“This is a historic move that fits perfectly into our broader plan to open Nigeria’s airspace to more international carriers and foster robust global partnerships,” Keyamo said. “We welcome CONVIASA Airlines and look forward to fruitful collaboration that benefits both our peoples.”

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to work closely and efficiently to actualise the proposed air link. Both parties expressed optimism that flight operations could commence in the shortest time possible, marking a new chapter in Nigeria-Venezuela relations.
