In a move to align with recently enacted legislation, President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the reorganisation of agencies under the Ministry of Aviation in Nigeria. The decision, which was recently gazetted, aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of these agencies in fulfilling their mandates.
According to a statement signed by the head of press and public affairs, Odutayo Oluseyi the reorganisation includes the establishment of new directorates within several agencies. Notable among these are the public affairs and consumer protection, corporate services and aviation security directorates.
The creation of the public affairs and consumer protection directorate aims to ensure that the agencies promptly address complaints from stakeholders and oversee the public affairs/protocol, consumer protection, SERVICOM and anti-corruption departments. Additionally, the aviation security directorate within the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will regulate the activities of the AVSEC personnel, particularly in light of their recent authorisation to bear arms. The corporate services directorates will be responsible for overseeing departments such as Procurement and Planning, Research and others.
In light of these changes, President Buhari has appointed Kabir Yusuf Mohammed as the new managing director/chief executive officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Mohammed previously served as the regional general manager of the central region airports under FAAN and also chaired the Aviation Roadmap Implementation Committee.
Similarly, Engr. Tayib Odunowo has been appointed as the substantive managing director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), replacing Matthew Lawrence Pwajok, who will return to his previous position as director of operations.
The directors-general of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Engr. Akin Olateru; the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof Mansur Matazu and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Musa Nuhu, will continue serving the remaining duration of their tenures in accordance with the Acts governing their respective agencies. The rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria, Captain Alkali Mansur Modibo has been granted a one-year extension in line with the college’s establishing Act.
To ensure the agencies are well-positioned to fulfil their statutory duties as outlined in the Acts, the Minister of Aviation has approved the appointment of several new directors, taking into consideration requirements such as appropriate placements and the need for federal character representation.
