Nigeria has reaffirmed its leadership in African aviation with the re-election of Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi as secretary-general of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC).
The announcement was made during the 35th Ordinary Plenary Session held in Brazzaville, Congo, where Adeyemi secured a decisive victory with 22 votes in favour and seven against. Her re-election underscores the collective confidence of AFCAC member states in her visionary leadership and accomplishments.
A key factor in her success was the instrumental role played by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN. The minister, who attended the conference, led strategic diplomatic efforts to garner support from African Union member states. His advocacy was pivotal in reinforcing Nigeria’s influence in shaping the continent’s aviation future.
“This is not just a win for Nigeria but for the entire African aviation industry,” said Keyamo, following the election. “Ms. Adeyemi’s outstanding leadership and innovative vision have positioned AFCAC to deliver transformative progress across the continent. Nigeria remains committed to driving AFCAC’s goals and ensuring the realization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).”
To ensure a transparent and fair process, an Election Commission was established in line with AFCAC’s Rules of Procedure for Plenary Meetings. The commission, comprising representatives from various African Union regions, conducted a rigorous election process. Under Keyamo’s leadership, Nigeria played a pivotal role within the West African bloc, securing widespread continental support for Adeyemi.
AFCAC, the specialised agency of the African Union for civil aviation, is tasked with implementing the Yamassoukro Decision (YD) and overseeing the Single African Air Transport Market. This initiative, uniting 37 member states, aims to boost Africa’s aviation competitiveness and connectivity.
Adeyemi’s re-election reaffirms her exceptional contributions to AFCAC, particularly in promoting integration and sustainable growth in African aviation. Her first term was marked by groundbreaking initiatives to enhance air transport efficiency, safety and collaboration across the continent.
With her renewed mandate, Adeyemi is set to further advance AFCAC’s objectives, championing a robust, unified and competitive air transport system for Africa. Her leadership ensures AFCAC will continue to drive transformative progress in the region’s aviation sector.
This achievement is a significant milestone for Nigeria, showcasing its unwavering commitment to strengthening Africa’s aviation ecosystem and fostering unity across the continent.
