…Appeals for reconsideration of planned peaceful protest
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, has assured the aviation workers’ union of a favorable resolution regarding the government’s 50 per cent deduction of internally generated revenue (IGR) from aviation agencies.
The minister urged the unions to reconsider their planned peaceful protest, scheduled for September 18, 2024 and allow for constructive dialogue.
In a statement, the minister said:
“The attention of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, has been drawn to the planned protest by the aviation workers’ union on September 18, 2024. While he acknowledges the concerns raised by the unions within the aviation sector over the 50 per cent deduction of IGR at source by the government, he assures all stakeholders that His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, is currently addressing these concerns. We understand the strain this has placed on the sector’s ability to meet critical safety and operational needs, and we take these concerns very seriously.”
Keyamo further emphasised that both he and President Tinubu are fully aware of the situation and are actively working to find a solution. “The government is committed to ensuring that the aviation sector continues to function efficiently and safely,” he added.
A meeting has been scheduled between the ministry and the union leadership for September 17, 2024, to openly discuss the issues. This, the minister noted, will allow President Tinubu sufficient time to intervene and address the unions’ concerns comprehensively.
In light of these efforts, the minister appealed to the unions to reconsider their planned protest and prioritize dialogue. He expressed confidence that through constructive engagement, a mutually beneficial solution can be reached, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the aviation sector.
“We thank the unions for their patience and understanding and assure them that their voices are being heard, and their concerns are being addressed,” the minister concluded.
