The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) clarified details surrounding the recovery operations of the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, which ditched off the coast of Bonny Finima in the Atlantic on October 24, 2024.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  In a statement, NSIB’s director of public affairs and family assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji confirmed that only three bodies were retrieved initially, countering reports suggesting five had been recovered. The incident involved eight individuals.

The NSIB outlined efforts to continue recovery and announced plans to deploy a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to locate the remaining bodies. While two additional bodies were identified by divers on October 25, ocean currents prevented their retrieval. The ROV, equipped with advanced sensors, will support targeted recovery and help gather evidence vital to the investigation.

NSIB’s director-general, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., emphasised the agency’s commitment: “The NSIB, with our partners, is dedicated to recovering all individuals and critical components. We aim to provide clear answers for families and the nation.”

The NSIB urged the public to avoid misinformation, which could hinder recovery and investigative efforts. It pledged to provide updates once new information became available. The bureau’s independent investigation highlights its ongoing mission to improve safety across Nigeria’s transport sector.
